How does art and cooking bring us joy?
with Nicola Bennet
Recently we spoke with Nicola Bennett, an abstract artist who grew up in England and now resides in Okere Falls, New Zealand.
She has discovered the deep interconnection between food, cooking, and painting, deriving immense joy from both processes. Nicola's love for food began in her childhood and was further cemented by her experiences in Italy and France.
In her art, she explores the sensory experiences of cooking and painting, often focusing on plant-based ingredients with distinctive flavors. With a strong appreciation for international cuisine, she seeks to recreate the experiences and flavors of different cultures in her paintings.
'I think just slowing down and paying attention to things that make you happy is key. So, if it's cooking, really appreciate all that sensory overload while you're cooking – even the sounds of sizzling, boiling, or chopping – because we're all in such a fast-paced world.'
We found this conversation extremely interesting and we thought we'd share our 3 key takeaways with you!
1) Being Mindful of Sensory Pleasures
Nicola emphasises the importance of sensory pleasures in both food and painting, stating that engaging with these senses heightens our happiness.
She encourages people to slow down and appreciate the sensory experiences in everyday life, from the sounds of cooking to the colours of a painting.
By immersing ourselves in these moments, we can find greater happiness and fulfillment.
2) Creativity and Presence
Nicola believes that engaging in creative activities, such as cooking and painting, allows us to be more present and in the moment.
By focusing on the process and act of creating, rather than rushing to finish a task, we can experience a greater sense of well-being and happiness.
3) Shared Sensory Experiences
Sharing sensory experiences with loved ones can create a special bond and bring joy to others.
Nicola's art is a testament to this, as she captures the essence of different ingredients and flavours to evoke emotions and memories in those who view her work.
Sharing these experiences can lead to more meaningful connections and greater appreciation for the world around us.
Nicola Bennett's art and philosophy showcase the powerful connection between food, sensory experiences, and happiness. By engaging with our senses, being present in the moment, and sharing experiences with others, we can find greater fulfilment and joy in our daily lives.
